Fascinating report from WREG, Channel 3, in Memphis, Tenn., shows how high tech thieves can steal your credit card information without even touching you in a crowd. I can’t even get my card to swipe half the time at the store, but I suppose anything is possible. Click here to see what Snopes.com has to say about it. Kind of a long shot, for now but who can keep up with technology?

Also, notice how close he had to hold the scanner to the card – the chips they use in credit cards don’t have enough energy to be read from a distance. So the threat, though real, isn’t particularly dangerous, unless you’re in a slow-moving crowd. Like Times Square on New Years, or a parade, or a major sporting event. But in those circumstances, you’re more likely to get your pocket picked anyway.
