, a U.K.-based fund manager, told members of Parliament that it can be “a nightmare” to hire and retain women. “A year maternity leave is too long, and sex discrimination claims that run into 10s of millions of pounds are ridiculous,” she said last week. Politically incorrect and probably also plain incorrect. Excessive protection to women at the employer’s expense is a big problem for working women. Small companies in particular can have trouble with long paid leaves and all that, unless the government chips in, as it should. But the financial sector is rather insensitive to the level of pay, and these government mandates are probably peanuts at the higher level. Sounds more like an excuse to discriminate, and a poorly reasoned one.
